Not So Funny – Facebook Ban for Mother

Once again I am taking a little departure from the weekend of funny but it is for good reason as I am sure you will agree.  There is little in this world that causes me any great surprise when it comes to acts of rampant stupidity and ignorance but THIS just beats all for the award for ignorant cruelty on social media.

The birth of a child is supposed to be one of joy and expectation but for some it can be a time of loss.  I’d like to tell you of a young family who waited excitedly for the birth of Grayson James Walker.  It is with great sympathy that I learnt her lived just eight hours after he was born on Feb. 15. He had anencephaly, a fatal condition in which a baby is born without parts of the brain and skull.

His mother, now at home has just recently posted photos of Grayson taken while they waited for him to pass on.   Some of these photos were without his little hat which strangely (at least from my perspective) ignited an apparent  furore by doing so.

Not long after this, Facebook deleted them because of the content.  Grayson’s mother was naturally hurt and has stated that:

“They allow people to post almost nude pictures of themselves, profanity, and so many other things but I’m not allowed to share a picture of God’s beautiful creation.”

To protest Facebook’s actions, Walker and her friends re-posted the photos — earning Walker a 24-hour ban from the site.  I cannot see how this is in any way defensible on the part of Facebook especially considering the nature of some of the entries you can find on its boards.  They have managed to turn a painful experience into a public farce and they owe this mother a great deal more than an apology.

  1. I don’t know what the video is (as it won’t show), but the mother blogged about her experience, and she’s such an amazing woman. Even her sorrow, and the blow in the face from FB, was by her and her faith, and the support of everyone else turned into something good – spreading the word of anencephaly to those not aware. And I know she’s currently expecting another baby, and is still celebrating Grayson’s short little life.

    • Damn – I can never figure out how to embed a clip. Thanks for letting me know. It is awful and wonderful at the same time isn’t it. Facebook should hang its head in shame and yet as you said something good did come from this. I wish her all the best with her new babe.
